Anthony Mackie’s Desert Warrior to Premiere at Zurich Film Festival

Anthony Mackie’s long-awaited film, Desert Warrior, is finally set to premiere at the Zurich Film Festival on September 28, 2023. After enduring years of delays, the Hollywood-style action epic promises to showcase the talent of its cast, including Ben Kingsley and Aiysha Hart, under the direction of Rupert Wyatt. The gala screening will be attended by members of the cast, according to festival organizers.

Filmed in Saudi Arabia in 2021, Desert Warrior carries a substantial budget of $150 million. The film is produced by MBC Studios, in collaboration with U.S. producer Jeremy Bolt, known for the Resident Evil franchise, and AGC Studios, led by Stuart Ford. This project is seen as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s ambition to establish a film industry that meets international standards.

The film’s narrative is set against the backdrop of 7th century pre-Islamic Arabia, depicting a land torn apart by rival tribes. In a gripping storyline, Ben Kingsley portrays Emperor Kisra, a formidable leader recognized for his ruthlessness. The plot intensifies when Aiysha Hart’s character, Princess Hind, defies Kisra’s wishes and flees into the desert, seeking refuge with Anthony Mackie’s character, a mysterious bandit. Together, they rally the warring tribes to challenge Kisra’s army.

The journey to the film’s premiere has not been smooth. According to Variety, production sources reported a tumultuous post-production phase that included extensive reshoots, recuts, and disputes among backers. Notably, Rupert Wyatt was temporarily removed from the project by MBC Studios but was later reinstated.

The Saudi Film Commission played a pivotal role in supporting the project through a cash rebate scheme aimed at attracting international productions. Additionally, the initiative is part of the country’s broader Quality of Life program, which strives to develop a vibrant domestic film industry. The worldwide rights for the film are being handled by AGC International, the sales and distribution arm of AGC Studios.

Anthony Mackie, a graduate of the Juilliard School, first gained recognition in films such as 8 Mile and The Hurt Locker. He has since achieved global fame through his role as Sam Wilson, also known as Falcon, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond blockbuster franchises, Mackie has balanced his career with independent films like The Banker and Detroit, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

As anticipation builds for the film’s premiere at the Zurich Film Festival, Desert Warrior stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s evolving film landscape, promising to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and star-studded cast.
