The city of Albany witnessed its inaugural indoor Diwali celebration on October 14, 2023, organized by the not-for-profit organization Ashvora. The event, held at Manley Hall, attracted a large crowd eager to participate in an evening filled with light, color, and community connection. With tickets sold out, attendees enjoyed a vibrant program featuring traditional music, dance, and a feast.
The festivities commenced with the ceremonial lighting of diyas, symbolic of the triumph of light over darkness. Following this, a Lakshmi Puja took place, honoring the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. This blend of cultural traditions set the tone for an enriching evening.
Participants of all ages took to the stage, showcasing traditional Hindu music and dance. The inclusive atmosphere encouraged community members to come together, celebrating their heritage and fostering connections. The culinary offerings included a vegetarian feast prepared by Albany’s Indian Tandoori Restaurant, adding to the evening’s communal spirit.
Asha Bhat, chief executive of the Southern Aboriginal Corporation and founder of Ashvora, emphasized the significance of the event. “Albany Utsav was built completely from scratch — with no government funding — powered by community spirit, dedication, and love,” she stated. Bhat expressed pride in what her small team achieved, highlighting the event’s success in celebrating culture and belonging.
This initiative by Ashvora aims to serve as a voice and a connection point for Albany’s migrant communities, focusing on inclusive celebrations that honor diverse cultural backgrounds. The overwhelming turnout and positive feedback from attendees reflect the community’s desire for such events.
The indoor Diwali celebration marks a significant milestone for Albany, showcasing the potential for future cultural events that bring people together. As communities continue to navigate the complexities of modern life, gatherings like these provide a vital opportunity for connection and celebration.
