Creative director Scott Barton and technical director David Morton revealed their imaginative destruction of Brisbane landmarks during a recent discussion. “We’re destroying City Hall, and the Wheel of Brisbane,” Barton stated, while Morton added, “Stefan’s Needle gets dropped from the sky as this twisted wreck.” The playful destruction continues with the government building One William Street, envisioned as splitting in half with a jagged top.
Despite its ominous title, We’re All Gonna Die! is fundamentally a comedy that explores the struggle of a school student, Theo, played by Milena Nesic. Theo is on a mission to convince others that a sea monster is hurtling toward Brisbane, ready to bring chaos. Barton elaborated on the narrative, saying, “This thing is coming, and it’s going to not end well for Brisbane, and humanity in general by extension, and this young person has proof that it’s coming and is ignored.”
The dark humor woven throughout the play serves to both entertain and provoke thought. Morton remarked on the tone, explaining, “It’s like, you laugh until you get punched in the gut.” The juxtaposition of comedy and a pressing environmental message offers audiences a moment to reflect on serious issues while enjoying the absurdity of the performance.
