Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Marries Jodie Haydon in Canberra

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony held at The Lodge in Canberra. The event took place shortly after the Federal Parliament recessed for the Christmas break, with approximately 40 close family members and friends in attendance. This marks a significant milestone as Mr. Albanese is the first prime minister to wed while in office since Australia’s federation.

The couple’s engagement was announced on Valentine’s Day last year, culminating a five-year relationship that began in 2020. Their initial meeting took place during an event in Melbourne, where they discovered a mutual passion for the South Sydney Rabbitohs National Rugby League team. Mr. Albanese, then the leader of the opposition, engaged the audience by asking for Rabbitohs fans. Jodie responded enthusiastically with “up the Rabbitohs,” prompting Mr. Albanese to introduce himself later that evening.

Reflecting on their connection, Mr. Albanese shared with Australian Women’s Weekly in 2022 that their first date was intended to be casual. “We had what I thought would just be a drink at Young Henrys in Newtown, and we got on really well. That’s how it started,” he explained.

Before marrying Jodie Haydon, Mr. Albanese was previously married to Carmel Tebbutt, with whom he separated in early 2019 after 19 years of marriage.

The timing of the wedding was closely kept, with Mr. Albanese indicating earlier this year that he planned to marry during the summer. He proceeded to tie the knot just one day after Parliament went into recess, emphasizing his commitment to a new chapter in his personal life.

This intimate ceremony reflects not only a personal milestone for the Prime Minister but also highlights an important moment in Australian political history. As Mr. Albanese steps into this new phase with Jodie Haydon, the couple’s love story continues to capture public interest, particularly given their shared experiences and values.
