Review Confirms Hunter S. Thompson’s 2005 Death as Suicide

A thorough review of the 2005 shooting death of journalist Hunter S. Thompson has reaffirmed the original finding by authorities that his death was a suicide. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced this conclusion following a request from Thompson’s widow, Anita Thompson, who approached authorities with “new concerns and potential information regarding the investigation” into her husband’s death.

In a statement, Anita Thompson expressed gratitude to the CBI for their “kind and thorough work,” stating, “This allows all of us who loved Hunter to move forward with a clean conscience.”

Background and Circumstances

Hunter S. Thompson, renowned for his pioneering style of gonzo journalism, passed away at his home in Aspen, Colorado, in February 2005 at the age of 67. He is best known for his influential works, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Following his death, Thompson’s remains were cremated, and in accordance with his wishes, were fired from a cannon during a private ceremony attended by friends and notable figures, including actor Johnny Depp, who portrayed him in the film adaptation of his famous work.

The original investigation into Thompson’s death concluded that he died by suicide, a finding that has now been confirmed through the recent review. Michael Buglione, the sheriff of the Aspen area, stated that he believed the initial investigation was conducted properly but recognized the importance of an independent review. He noted, “CBI’s conclusions reaffirm the original findings and, we hope, provide reassurance and clarity.”

Implications of the Review

The confirmation of the suicide finding has significant implications for those who knew Thompson and his legacy. The review not only serves to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death but also offers closure to friends and family who have been grappling with the loss for nearly two decades.

The CBI’s announcement highlights their commitment to thorough investigations, even in cases that have been long settled. This recent review stands as a testament to the enduring impact of Thompson’s work and the ongoing interest in his life and career.

As the literary and journalistic communities reflect on Thompson’s contributions, this reaffirmation allows his legacy to be honored without the cloud of uncertainty that had lingered since his passing. The CBI’s findings ensure that Hunter S. Thompson’s story, marked by creativity and controversy, continues to resonate in cultural discussions around journalism and mental health.
