The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has recognized two of its members for their exceptional contributions to the medical field. Former President of the AMA Northern Territory, Dr. Paul Bauert, has retired following a distinguished career, while Dr. Haseeb Riaz has been awarded the title of Young Australian of the Year for Western Australia.
Dr. Paul Bauert’s Impact on Child Health Services
Dr. Paul Bauert, who served as President of the AMA NT during multiple terms from 1993 to 2011, has been a stalwart advocate for child health services in the Northern Territory. His leadership and dedication to paediatric medicine have left a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the communities he served.
During the 1980s, Dr. Bauert became the first paediatric registrar in the Northern Territory under the guidance of respected consultant, Dr. Alan Walker. Throughout his career, he worked as a consultant paediatrician in both the Northern Territory and Queensland. His commitment to improving child health has been recognized multiple times, as he received the AMA President’s Medal on two occasions for his advocacy efforts.
As Dr. Bauert transitions into retirement, the AMA extends its best wishes for his future endeavors, acknowledging the significant contributions he has made to the field.
Dr. Haseeb Riaz: Champion of Positive Masculinity
In a separate but equally commendable achievement, Dr. Haseeb Riaz has been honored as the Young Australian of the Year for Western Australia. Currently an intern at Royal Perth Hospital, Dr. Riaz is recognized for his role as a positive masculinity educator and co-founder of the educational initiative MAN-UP.
Dr. Riaz has actively worked to reshape perceptions surrounding masculinity, aiming to combat negative stereotypes that can adversely affect young men. Through MAN-UP, he and co-founder Gareth Shanthikumar have developed programs designed to enhance mental health, promote open communication, and create pathways for healthier lifestyles among young males.
In addition to his advocacy work, Dr. Riaz has held significant leadership roles, including chair of the Medical Student Council of WA and a board director of the Australian Medical Students Association. His recognition as Young Australian of the Year underscores his commitment to fostering positive change.
The AMA applauds both Dr. Bauert for his years of service and Dr. Riaz for his innovative contributions to society. Their achievements exemplify the dedication and impact that members of the medical community can have on the health and well-being of Australians.
