The Victorian Pill Testing Service has issued a significant overdose warning after discovering heroin mixed in a powder sold as the anti-anxiety medication alprazolam, commonly known as Xanax. The alarming findings, released on March 15, 2024, revealed that the tested substance contained no detectable benzodiazepines, the class of drugs to which alprazolam belongs.
According to the Victorian Pill Testing Service, this situation poses a serious risk of unexpected sedation, respiratory depression, and potential overdose, particularly for individuals who may believe they are consuming a benzodiazepine. The service emphasized the dangers of heroin, stating, “Heroin is an opioid—a central nervous system depressant that slows breathing and can cause life-threatening overdose, especially in people who have never or rarely used opioids.”
Risks of Mixing Substances
While both heroin and alprazolam act as depressants, they are distinctly different substances with differing effects on the body. The Victorian Pill Testing Service warned that combining heroin with other depressants, such as alcohol, benzodiazepines (including Xanax or Valium), or GHB, significantly increases the risk of overdose.
The service has outlined several safety recommendations for individuals who may encounter unknown powders. These include starting with a very small amount, avoiding mixing with alcohol or other depressants, using drugs in the presence of others rather than alone, carrying naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses, and calling emergency services if someone is unresponsive or having difficulty breathing.
