The Longest Day challenge held on Rottnest Island has achieved a remarkable milestone by raising a staggering $129,000 for Cancer Council WA, setting a new national fundraising record for 2025. This year, Mark and his team, known as Paul’s Heart and Jake’s Strength, aimed to raise $50,000 as they completed their third consecutive challenge. The initiative honors the memory of Mark’s brother, Paul, who passed away from gall bladder cancer in 2024, just before they could complete their second year together.
Organizing The Longest Day event on Rottnest Island presents unique challenges. Participants face substantial personal costs, which include travel, accommodation, and logistics, all of which are incurred before any fundraising can begin. The event, played on a nine-hole course with limited player capacity, initially made the goal of $50,000 seem ambitious. However, the outcome has exceeded expectations, with Rottnest now recognized as the top fundraising club in Australia for 2025.
Participants Surpass Expectations
Mark reported that this year’s challenge saw an impressive turnout. “Our three-day event had 35 players complete over 72 holes in just one day. Fifteen players completed even more, with one participant managing back-to-back 72-hole days. Five players achieved an astonishing 100 holes in a single day, and three completed back-to-back 100-hole days,” he said. Mark emphasized that while these achievements were significant, they pale in comparison to the daily struggles faced by those battling cancer.
A highlight of this year’s event was the attendance of Xavier Ellis from Triple M, whose enthusiastic coverage and support helped raise awareness of the challenge. Ellis has expressed interest in participating in the full 72 holes next year, further adding to the event’s visibility.
A Community Coming Together
The Longest Day serves as an inclusive opportunity for golfers of all ages and skill levels to engage in a meaningful cause. The event aims to foster a sense of community while raising funds for critical cancer research and support services provided by the Cancer Council.
