Claude Monet’s Iconic Haystacks Painting Leaving Tweed Gallery

Claude Monet’s renowned painting Meules, milieu du jour (Haystacks, midday) will conclude its display at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre on 26 October 2025. This significant artwork has been on loan from the National Gallery of Australia in Kamberri/Canberra since its arrival on 1 November 2023, as part of the Sharing the National Collection initiative aimed at making national treasures accessible to regional audiences.

Impact of Monet’s Masterpiece in Murwillumbah

Displayed for nearly two years, the painting has played a pivotal role in attracting both local and international visitors to the gallery. The director of the gallery, Ingrid Hedgcock, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase this masterpiece, stating, “We’ve been honoured to be the temporary custodians of this work from the national collection.”

Hedgcock noted that the iconic nature of Meules, milieu du jour has broadened the gallery’s audience. Many visitors who may not have considered visiting a regional gallery found themselves captivated by Monet’s work and other exhibits, including pieces from the Margaret Olley Art Centre.

During its exhibition, the painting drew considerable media attention, with comparisons made between Monet’s soft pastel colors and the vibrant environment of the North Coast. The success of this display was further enhanced in February 2024, when it was accompanied by additional works, including three by Margaret Olley and a painting titled Natura morta by Italian artist Giorgio Morandi.

Broader Significance of the Sharing Initiative

Dr. Nick Mitzevich, director of the National Gallery, highlighted the initiative’s success in bringing significant artworks to a wider audience. “The Sharing the National Collection program has allowed the National Gallery to bring significant works by globally recognised artists to regional Australians,” he stated. “Since this exciting first loan to the Tweed Regional Gallery, over a million people have experienced the national collection closer to home.”

As the last day for viewing Meules, milieu du jour approaches, art enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the gallery. The final public hours will be from Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (AEDT), with free entry. However, group visits and tours will require advance booking through the gallery’s website.

As the painting prepares to depart, its impact on the local community and the enhancing of cultural engagement in regional Australia will undoubtedly be felt long after it leaves Murwillumbah.
