Grace Baba has made history as the first player in the Australian Football League Women’s (AFLW) to receive a suspension prior to her official debut. The young athlete, selected by the Hawthorn Football Club in last year’s draft, was handed a one-match suspension for striking Richmond player Laura McClelland during a practice match on August 13, 2023.
The incident occurred off the ball while both players were vying for position deep in Hawthorn’s forward line. Footage from the match indicated that Baba struck McClelland in the stomach with her right hand, resulting in McClelland dropping to her knees. Following the match, the match review officer classified the action as a strike with intentional conduct, medium impact, and body contact.
Baba’s suspension means she will be ineligible for selection in Hawthorn’s round one clash against Brisbane at Springfield Central Stadium in Ipswich on August 17, 2023. This decision marks a significant moment in AFLW history, as it highlights the league’s commitment to player safety and discipline.
Despite this setback, the Hawks secured a resounding 37-point victory over Richmond in their final practice match, showcasing their strength ahead of the season. Captain Emily Bates demonstrated her dominance on the field with 23 disposals and seven inside 50 entries. She was well-supported by Tilly Lucas-Rodd, who recorded 19 disposals.
Last year’s leading goal kicker, Aine McDonagh, also shone during the match, scoring three goals, while teammate Greta Bodey contributed with two goals. The overall performance from the Hawks was encouraging, setting a positive tone as they prepare for the upcoming season, despite the unfortunate incident involving Baba.
As the AFLW continues to grow, this incident serves as a reminder of the challenges and responsibilities that come with competing at a high level. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how the league enforces its rules and how teams navigate player conduct both on and off the field.
