Hardware Store Rescues Riverside Nursery Employees, Creates New Jobs

A hardware store in Kalaru has stepped up to support employees from the recently closed Riverside nursery in Bega Valley, providing new job opportunities for those impacted by the closure. This initiative follows the decision by Tulgeen Disability Services to shut down the nursery in June 2023 to prevent further financial challenges for the organization.

George Karmadonoff, the hardware store manager, took immediate action after learning about the nursery’s closure. He visited the site during the final week to assess how he could assist the affected employees, many of whom are supported workers and horticulturists. “On the grapevine, we heard that Riverside was closing down,” Karmadonoff explained. “I relayed that to our owner, and his first remark was, ‘What happens to all the people?’ So I went down there to find out.”

During his visit, Karmadonoff witnessed the emotional impact of the closure. “There was a lot of emotion and sad faces,” he noted. With a personal connection to the community—his son is on the autism spectrum—Karmadonoff was motivated to help others achieve their goals. “When I hear things in the community, we look to find out all the information we can and open up dialogue about what we can do to assist,” he said.

Karmadonoff’s outreach has resulted in six new positions for former Riverside employees at the expanded hardware store in Kalaru. This includes three horticulturists and three supported employees. One of the supported employees, David Aynesley, began his role on September 9, 2023, and expressed his enthusiasm for the new job. “Time is flying. I don’t want to go home at the end of the day,” he said with a smile.

The new team has integrated seamlessly into the store’s operations, quickly adapting to customer service roles. Karmadonoff emphasized the importance of enhancing the customer experience. “We want to be the service that helps people all the way to their car with their purchase,” he remarked. “Bringing humanity back into sales, not just the transaction.”

Horticulturist Cally Jenkins praised the hardware store’s generosity. “For these guys to step up and say they will put their oar in the boat and open opportunities for some people, it was good,” she stated. Jenkins highlighted the positive alignment of values between Tulgeen’s supported employees and their new employer.

The collaboration between the hardware store and Tulgeen demonstrates a commitment to supported employment, ensuring that those in need receive the necessary resources and encouragement in the workplace. “They are very positive about supported employment, while being supported by Tulgeen staff,” said Tulgeen representative, Ms. Barbour. “We’re working together to make sure our supported employees are being supported in the workplace.”

This initiative not only provides jobs but also fosters a sense of community, illustrating how local businesses can make a significant difference in the lives of individuals facing challenges. The hardware store’s actions serve as a testament to the impact of corporate responsibility and community engagement.
