A new initiative, the Mighty Trek Challenge, has launched in the Illawarra region to support families with premature and sick infants. This event involves volunteers pushing a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) incubator, affectionately named Hope, across a distance of 900 kilometres, stopping at 20 locations from Sydney to Melbourne. Organised by the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, the challenge commenced on October 1, 2023, in North Sydney to mark the foundation’s 20th anniversary.
On October 7, the challenge will reach Wollongong at Stuart Park, followed by a stop in Shellharbour on October 8, at Harrison Park. The funds raised during this trek will directly benefit local communities and hospitals, with half of the proceeds allocated to essential equipment, training, and other vital resources needed in NICUs.
According to Felicia Welstead, CEO of Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, the objective of the challenge is to “do something big” for the foundation’s milestone anniversary. “We decided that pushing a neonatal incubator the distance from Sydney to Melbourne was a good idea,” she said. Welstead encouraged community participation, stating, “Whether you can push 100 metres or 10 kilometres like one guy did, we want everyone to get involved.”
The incubator, which weighs over 100 kilograms, has been specially modified with bicycle wheels to facilitate movement. “You need to give it a good push, but once you’re going, it’s not too bad to push,” Welstead explained.
Participants include families who have experienced the challenges of having a premature baby, as well as hospital staff and community supporters. “We have families who have been through this experience and their little ones who might have grown up a little bit now,” Welstead noted. She mentioned that many community members have joined after seeing the initiative on social media, eager to contribute to a worthy cause.
The Mighty Trek Challenge aims to raise $1 million to ensure the longevity of the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation for the next two decades. This funding will allow the foundation to expand its support services in 20 tertiary hospitals by 2026, significantly doubling its capacity to assist families during one of the most challenging times in their lives.
As the event unfolds, participants and supporters have already shared emotional moments, highlighting the important role this fundraising initiative plays in raising awareness of the struggles faced by families with premature and sick babies. The Mighty Trek Challenge not only serves as a fundraiser but also as a celebration of resilience and community strength, bringing together individuals and families committed to making a difference in the lives of others.
