Jewish Community Expresses Discontent with PM Albanese’s Response

News. Portrait. Jewish Community Council president Michael Levitt.

The Jewish community across Australia, from Bondi Beach to Perth, has expressed a significant loss of trust in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This dissatisfaction stems primarily from his handling of the aftermath of the recent tragedy in Sydney, where 15 innocent lives were lost. Michael Levitt, president of the Jewish Community Council of Western Australia, articulated the community’s sentiment, stating that Mr. Albanese would not be welcome in Perth synagogues due to his inadequate response.

Dr. Levitt remarked, “His goose is cooked, as far as the Jewish community is concerned. There’s so much of a belief that he hasn’t listened.” He emphasized the importance of humility in leadership, especially during crises of such magnitude. Many Australians expect their leaders to learn from mistakes, but they feel Mr. Albanese has shown no inclination to do so.

Concerns have been raised regarding Mr. Albanese’s refusal to initiate a Federal royal commission into the events of December 14 and the political and cultural factors that have allowed anti-Semitism to grow in Australia. Critics argue that this hesitation is not only unreasonable but also dismissive of the genuine grief and anger felt within the Jewish community.

While Mr. Albanese has framed calls for a royal commission as politically motivated, it is clear that the feelings of grief and anger are widespread. His argument that a Federal commission could not run simultaneously with Dennis Richardson’s inquiry into Federal intelligence agencies has not convinced many. This perspective has led to growing frustration, as Dr. Levitt pointed out that the Prime Minister’s stance only contributes to a sense of alienation.

Many Australians recall how Mr. Albanese navigated past controversies, such as the expenses scandal, believing he could similarly ride out this current storm. However, the anger among Jewish Australians is profound and deeply felt, suggesting that the usual political tactics may not suffice in this instance.

The editorial responsibility for these comments is attributed to WAN Editor-in-Chief Christopher Dore. The discontent within the community reflects broader concerns about leadership accountability and the urgent need for effective dialogue in addressing the issues that have arisen in recent months.
