Longtime Leader Honoured for Service to Millicent Girl Guides

Heather Lowndes, a dedicated leader of the Millicent Girl Guides, has been honoured for her decades of service in the Limestone Coast. Her contributions to guiding began in 1980 when she moved from Canberra to Millicent and took on the role of Assistant Leader. By 1999, Ms Lowndes became the leader of the Millicent Guides, a position she has held continuously since.

Reflecting on her experiences, Ms Lowndes describes her journey as “busy and rewarding.” She has witnessed numerous girls develop essential skills, gain confidence, and cultivate leadership abilities through the program. “The Millicent Girl Guides have learned many skills from developing interests, gaining confidence and leadership skills,” she noted.

Achievements and Contributions

Among her many achievements, Ms Lowndes has attended four national jamborees and organised a state camp at Lucindale. Her leadership extended beyond the Millicent unit as she took on additional roles, including Region Outdoors Coordinator and Regional Manager in 2016, all while continuing to lead the Millicent Unit. In 2019, she initiated an older unit of Ranger Guides, further expanding the opportunities available to young women in the area. Most recently, she has worked to re-establish the Mount Gambier Guide Unit, which is set to begin operating in 2025.

The culmination of her efforts was recently celebrated when Bev Severin, the State Girl Guides Commissioner, presented Ms Lowndes with the prestigious Emu Award. This award recognises sustained leadership at both regional and state levels. In her citation, it was noted that Ms Lowndes inspires others, identifies strengths in her team, and leads with professionalism, care, and inclusion. The presentation was a memorable occasion for both Ms Lowndes and the guides in the Limestone Coast region.

Continuing the Legacy

Currently, Ms Lowndes is focused on finding new leaders for the Mount Gambier Girl Guide unit, which meets on Tuesday afternoons during school terms. She emphasises the rewarding nature of this volunteer role, stating it provides an opportunity to help girls develop confidence and life skills while enhancing personal leadership abilities.

Individuals interested in getting involved can contact Ms Lowndes directly at 0428 334 028 for further information. Her commitment to guiding continues to shape the lives of many young girls, ensuring that the spirit of the Millicent Girl Guides remains strong for future generations.
