Northern Rivers Community Foundation Distributes $416,385 in Grants

The Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) held its annual Community Grant Giving event on March 15, 2024, at Elements of Byron, distributing a total of $416,385 to support local community projects. This year’s event celebrated the impactful efforts of local organizations dedicated to enhancing the Northern Rivers region.

Organizers reported that the grants supported 31 community organizations to deliver 33 projects. Among these, $202,429 was allocated through local impact grants, which are intended to assist grassroots organizations with funding of up to $15,000 each.

Highlighting Local Projects and Initiatives

Several noteworthy projects received funding aimed at addressing various community needs. The Ballina Hot Meal Centre, for instance, received a grant to continue its essential service of providing meals to those in need. The funding will cover costs for food, takeaway containers, and fuel for volunteers who collect donated food each week.

Another recipient, the Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA), will use its grant to establish a collaborative choir from across the Bundjalung Nation. This initiative focuses on learning language songs from various Indigenous clans, fostering an inclusive environment that promotes cultural pride and healing.

The Mental Health Support Group also received funding to assist individuals living with mental illness, providing essential household items and emergency food to help support their families.

In response to rising food insecurity, Agape Outreach was awarded a grant to distribute over 200 food vouchers and provide hot meals for an additional 500 people in the Tweed community, addressing the challenges brought on by recent cost of living increases.

Expanding Community Infrastructure

In addition to local impact grants, the NRCF awarded $204,166 for community infrastructure projects designed to enhance regional connectivity and inclusivity. The Kyogle Together Incorporated initiative aims to install a community-accessible freeze-drying machine, which will help reduce food waste and bolster local food security through workshops.

The Murwillumbah Community Centre will install a solar power system at its Food Hub, aimed at reducing operational costs while increasing the amount of fresh food available to the community. This project reflects a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

Other projects include the establishment of a transitional communal living space by Seaside Shelter Inc., aimed at providing young people with a supportive environment for personal growth. The Ballina Masonic Centre will upgrade its kitchen facilities to better serve over 300 meals daily to vulnerable populations.

The wide array of projects funded by the NRCF illustrates a strong commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals across the Northern Rivers. With funding directed towards mental health support, cultural initiatives, and essential community services, the NRCF continues to play a vital role in fostering resilience and connection within the region.
