The Perth Lynx are on a remarkable winning streak, aiming for their eighth consecutive victory in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). Veteran player Alex Ciabattoni attributes this impressive performance to the team’s unselfish attitude and willingness to accept reduced playing time. The Lynx have not only secured seven consecutive wins but have done so with an average margin of victory of 22 points.

Head coach Ryan Petrik prioritizes player freshness, understanding the importance of avoiding fatigue as the season progresses and playoffs approach. Following their recent triumph over Adelaide, where they won by 18 points at the Perth High Performance Centre, the team is now focused on their upcoming match against Canberra, scheduled for 09:30 WST on Sunday.

Petrik’s strategy has seen no player exceed 30 minutes on the court in the last two games, a tactic that Ciabattoni believes enhances overall performance. “It’s easier to make shots when you’re not tired,” she stated. The team’s dynamic allows for more effective rotations, ensuring that every player is prepared to contribute, regardless of their minutes on the court.

Ciabattoni highlighted the positive atmosphere within the team, stating, “Whether it is five minutes or 20 minutes, no one cares. That’s just been incredible.” This collective mindset fosters a supportive environment, making it easier for players to perform at their best.

As the only remaining member from the last Lynx squad that achieved seven straight wins during the 2017/18 season, Ciabattoni acknowledges the historical significance of their current run. That season ended with the Lynx finishing at the top of the ladder but facing elimination in the semi-finals. The team has not claimed a championship since 1992, and their current trajectory could be pivotal in breaking that drought.

“The more wins we can string together, the more confidence everyone has,” Ciabattoni remarked. She emphasized that building confidence is crucial as they approach the finals, stating that while reaching the playoffs is a significant achievement, winning in the finals poses a greater challenge.

The Lynx are determined to leverage their momentum heading into the playoffs. By maintaining their current focus and strategy, they hope to transform their strong performance into postseason success. The upcoming game against Canberra represents another opportunity for the Lynx to solidify their standing and continue their impressive form in the WNBL.
