The legacy of the late Dr David Harris OAM will be commemorated by the Wattle Range Council, which plans to enhance recognition of his contributions to the Millicent community. A room at the Millicent Visitor Information Centre, originally named in his honor in the early 1990s, will undergo updates to improve visibility and provide information about his achievements.
Dr Harris, a respected general practitioner in Millicent from 1954 until his death in 1996, made significant contributions to the local community. His service in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II preceded his medical studies at the University of Adelaide. Over the years, he founded the Millicent National Trust and the Millicent Museum, served as honorary surgeon for the St John Ambulance Brigade, and held the position of principal medical officer at Millicent Hospital. His dedication to community service earned him the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Strengthening Community Recognition
Although the room was initially designated to honor Dr Harris, the changing layout of the Visitor Information Centre led to reduced references to him. Following a request from a community member, the council has committed to adding new signage in the Dr David Harris Room. This will include a summary of his notable achievements, ensuring that his contributions remain visible to visitors and residents alike.
A plaque honoring Dr Harris remains prominently displayed at the Millicent Visitor Information Centre, and his role in establishing the National Trust is acknowledged on a panel within the museum. These initiatives reflect the community’s desire to preserve the memory of a man who significantly impacted Millicent through his medical practice and cultural contributions.
The decision to enhance the recognition of Dr Harris comes not only as a tribute to his legacy but also as a reminder of the importance of community figures in shaping local history. The council’s efforts aim to inspire future generations to appreciate the contributions of dedicated individuals like Dr Harris, who devoted their lives to the betterment of their communities.
