Albanese Launches Royal Commission on Antisemitism After Bondi Attack

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the establishment of a royal commission to investigate antisemitism in Australia, following the tragic shootings at Bondi Beach that resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, including a 10-year-old girl. This decision, made on January 8, 2026, comes after mounting pressure from parliamentarians and the public, as well as a joint letter from the victims’ families.

The royal commission will be led by former High Court justice Virginia Bell and will focus on four main areas. These include investigating the nature and prevalence of antisemitism, understanding the motivations behind these acts, assessing how law enforcement—including border, immigration, and security agencies—responds to antisemitism, and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the Bondi Beach terror attack. Additionally, the commission will make recommendations aimed at strengthening social cohesion within Australia.

In his announcement, Albanese described the Bondi Beach attack as “an antisemitic terrorist attack, aimed at Jewish Australians inspired by ISIS.” He emphasized that it was the deadliest such incident in Australian history, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The Prime Minister also noted that Dennis Richardson, who is currently leading an inquiry into intelligence agencies, will contribute to the royal commission’s work.

Albanese assured the public that the inquiry would not interfere with ongoing criminal investigations related to the attack. He expressed confidence in Bell’s capability, stating, “Bell has the deep experience and expertise to conduct her inquiry in such a way that meaningfully examines the impact of antisemitism on the daily life of Jewish Australians and works to promote social cohesion while not providing a platform for others’ hatred.”

The decision to hold an inquiry came after Albanese had previously resisted calls for one. He remarked, “One of the reasons our nation is one of the oldest and strongest modern democracies in the world is because every Australian has the right to express their view.” He reiterated his commitment to listening to the concerns of Australians and taking the necessary steps to foster a positive change.

During this challenging time, Albanese reaffirmed the government’s support for the Jewish community, acknowledging the “devastating pain” they are experiencing. The royal commission is expected to deliver its report by December 14, 2026, marking a significant step in addressing the issues of antisemitism and promoting social unity in Australia.
