New South Wales Enacts Stricter Gun Laws Following Bondi Attack

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - DECEMBER 20: Chris Minns, the New South Wales Premier, addresses the media during a press conference outside the New South Wales Parliament on December 20, 2025 in Sydney, Australia. Life slowly returned to normal at Bondi Beach, with people from all walks of life still paying respects and tributes as funerals for the victims continued across the city. Police say at least 16 people, including one suspected gunman, were killed and more than 40 others injured when two attackers opened fire near a Hanukkah celebration at the world-famous Bondi Beach, in what authorities have declared a terrorist incident. New South Wales (NSW) has enacted some of the strictest gun laws in Australia following a recent attack in Bondi. The state parliament approved the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2025 with a decisive 18 to 8 vote during an overnight session that concluded early on December 24, 2025. The legislation, which aims to enhance public safety, reflects a swift response from the government amidst heightened concerns regarding firearm access.

The NSW Labor government led the charge for these reforms, securing backing from the Liberal Party. In a marked division, the National Party and the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party opposed the bill, while the Green Party chose to abstain from the vote. The legislative changes focus on tightening regulations surrounding gun ownership, particularly for individuals connected to terrorism-related investigations.

Key Features of the New Legislation

Among the notable provisions is an amendment introduced by the Green Party. This amendment prohibits gun ownership not only for individuals under investigation for terrorism-related offenses but also extends this restriction to members of their households. This measure aims to mitigate potential risks posed by those linked to extremist activities.

The passage of this bill comes in the wake of increasing calls for stricter gun control measures across Australia. The Bondi attack, which raised alarms about public safety, catalyzed discussions among lawmakers. The Labor government emphasized that these reforms are crucial for protecting citizens and preventing future incidents.

As the laws take effect immediately, law enforcement agencies and community organizations will be tasked with implementing the new regulations. The government has indicated that additional resources will be allocated to ensure compliance and to support ongoing public safety initiatives.

The reactions to the new legislation have been mixed. Supporters argue that the reforms are a necessary step toward enhancing community safety, particularly in light of recent events. Opponents, however, have voiced concerns about the potential overreach of these measures and their impact on responsible gun owners.

The swift passage of the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2025 underscores the urgency felt by the NSW government in addressing firearm-related concerns. As the state navigates the implications of these new laws, ongoing dialogue among lawmakers, law enforcement, and the public will be essential to ensure that safety and rights are balanced effectively.
