Orange City Council approved nearly $100,000 in small donations throughout 2025 to support various community initiatives. The increase in the budget for such donations, rising by $10,000 to $90,000 for the 2025/26 financial year, reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to facilitate community engagement and support charitable functions.
Cr Steve Peterson, the chairman of the finance policy committee, emphasized the importance of these contributions. He stated that ratepayers expect the council to back meaningful community events and charities. “The small donation program is a way that modest amounts can be given to allow volunteers to do useful service to Orange,” he noted.
In the previous financial year, the council operated under budget, spending $8,633 less than allocated. As of now, they have committed $61,909.75 of their budget for the current financial period. Cr Peterson highlighted the importance of prudent financial management, ensuring that the allocated budget lasts throughout the year rather than operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
Distribution of Funds and Requests
In 2025, the council received 54 donation requests, with decisions made on each. Of these, 51 groups were awarded either partial or full funding. The total amount approved for the small donation grants reached $94,294.75, following requests that exceeded $132,000.
While there are established protocols for assessing which applications receive funding, Cr Peterson acknowledged that some decisions are influenced by subjective factors. Notably, two organizations were awarded the highest single grant of $5,000 each. These were Push for Palliative, which aimed to provide essential items for Orange Hospital, and Orange Uniting Church, which received funds to assist in serving hot take-away meals.
Despite the remaining budget of $25,590.25, Cr Peterson expressed confidence that the council could manage its funds effectively. He pointed out that many groups have already received support ahead of upcoming events. “There will always be a variety of good causes that don’t get exactly what they want,” he remarked, “but on the flip side, $90,000 has been spent on useful community events, and this program should continue.”
The Orange City Council’s proactive approach to community funding through its small donation program illustrates its commitment to enhancing local support systems. The council’s efforts not only provide financial assistance but also highlight the value of community engagement in fostering a supportive environment for various initiatives.
