Victoria Harbour Promenade Access Restricted for New Year’s Eve

Residents and visitors to Docklands are advised to anticipate significant access restrictions along the Victoria Harbour Promenade on New Year’s Eve. Safety assessments have highlighted potential deterioration in some of the piles supporting sections of the wharf. With over 80,000 people expected to gather in Docklands for Melbourne’s largest annual celebration, the City of Melbourne and Development Victoria have deemed these measures both essential and precautionary.

A spokesperson for the City of Melbourne stated that while New Year’s Eve represents a highly anticipated community event, ensuring public safety remains paramount. “Together with Development Victoria, we’ve made the difficult but necessary decision to restrict general access to the Victoria Harbour part of the wharf to the public on New Year’s Eve as a precaution,” the spokesperson said. “Safety must remain our top priority.”

Under these restrictions, public access to the Victoria Harbour Promenade will be closed. Entry will only be granted to individuals holding pre-purchased tickets for venues and commercial boats operating in the area. Ticketholders, alongside businesses and private or commercial boat operators, can access the promenade via Enterprize Way. Street marshals will be present on the night to assist in directing attendees.

This decision follows preliminary investigations that revealed signs of potential deterioration in some structural supports for the waterfront. Authorities have emphasized that, while no immediate danger has been detected, limiting crowd load during one of the highest-traffic nights of the year is a prudent precaution.

The situation mirrors concerns raised last year regarding the NewQuay Promenade side of Victoria Harbour, where aging piles prompted partial access restrictions and repair plans. Although NewQuay remained open to pedestrians, cyclists, and businesses, vehicle access was limited during ongoing safety assessments. This has sparked community inquiries regarding the management of waterfront infrastructure during major events, including the upcoming 2024 Melbourne Boat Show.

In Docklands, the City of Melbourne maintains that the New Year’s Eve exclusion zone is a temporary measure based solely on safety advice. “There’s no better time than New Year’s Eve in Melbourne – it’s our biggest community celebration – however safety has and always will remain our top priority,” the spokesperson reiterated.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to review event maps, plan their movements in advance, and allocate extra time to navigate the precinct on the night. Complete details regarding the New Year’s Eve celebrations are available on the City of Melbourne’s official event page.
