On March 15, 2024, the Mildura Rural City Council hosted a Civic Reception honoring Josh Waters, a five-time Australian Superbike Champion. Waters, who is recognized as the most successful rider in the 36-year history of the championship, was celebrated not just for his impressive achievements on the racetrack, but also for his enduring connection to his hometown of Mildura, Australia.
Waters first began his journey in motorsport at the tender age of five, when he first climbed onto a race bike. By the age of six, he had already secured his first national title, foreshadowing a career marked by extraordinary success. He achieved championships in 2009, 2012, 2017, 2024, and most recently, 2025. His career has taken him around the globe, including podium finishes at the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hour Endurance Race in Japan and participation in the fiercely competitive British Superbike Championship.
Local Recognition for Global Achievements
Despite his international success, Waters has remained committed to his roots in Mildura. “I’ve been able to achieve what I have achieved, but I have done it all from Mildura,” he stated. “I train here and I live here because that is where I want to live. I love the people, I love the area … it’s just that on some weekends I live a different life.”
His grounded demeanor has endeared him to the local community. Mildura Mayor Ali Cupper praised Waters as an “outstanding ambassador” for the region. “Josh’s dedication, professionalism, and genuine character make him someone our whole community is proud of,” Cr Cupper commented. “His success on the track is matched only by his commitment to his roots.”
Sports Councillor Glenn Milne echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of Waters’ record five championships. “He has ridden with success in Japan, England, America—he’s respected around the world,” Cr Milne remarked. “But he’s also humble, generous with his time, and always willing to help people. Mildura should be proud of him, and we are.”
A Community Champion
For Waters, receiving recognition from his hometown holds profound significance. “I certainly don’t do any of it for the accolades,” he shared. “But it does mean a lot when you are recognized by people in your own town, and a lot of the time it is people who mightn’t even have an interest in the sport. So I do feel that pride from my community.”
Waters also expressed his desire to remain a regular member of the Sunraysia community. “At the end of the day, I just like being a normal Sunraysia person. When I go pick up my kids from school, I might hear, ‘Hey, aren’t you that motorbike rider?’ I just say, ‘Yeah, that’s me — but I’m also Izzy and Lenny’s dad.’
The Civic Reception not only celebrated Waters’ impressive accomplishments but also highlighted the profound impact he has made both on and off the racetrack. His story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes in Mildura and beyond, embodying a blend of talent, humility, and dedication to his community.
