Ash Riddell Celebrates AFLW Best-and-Fairest Victory with Teammate

Ash Riddell has secured the title of best-and-fairest in the AFLW, a recognition that underscores her remarkable season with North Melbourne. Riddell, who has been a standout performer, accumulated a total of 23 votes, outpacing Geelong’s Georgie Prespakis, who finished with 20 votes. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Riddell, especially after years of competing closely with teammate Jasmine Garner for top honours.

The relationship between Riddell and Garner has proven pivotal in their success. Both players have frequently “pinched” votes from one another in past seasons, contributing to their competitive environment. Reflecting on their partnership, Riddell stated, “We just make each other better. We’re sort of by-products of each other on the field and we have some good times off the field as well. It makes footy really enjoyable.”

Riddell’s performance this season has been nothing short of extraordinary. She was named best-on-ground six times in just twelve appearances, solidifying her status among the league’s elite. Garner, although not the recipient of the best-and-fairest title this year, remains a formidable player in her own right. Riddell expressed admiration for Garner, noting, “She should be up here a few more times than I should be. She’s an amazing player and is so well respected by the AFLW community.”

Record-Equalling Achievement

The 31-year-old Riddell also achieved a personal landmark by winning her record-equalling eighth All-Australian blazer this season. Garner, already an established player in the league when Riddell joined North Melbourne in 2019, has been a source of inspiration for her teammate. Riddell’s accolades include being named captain of the representative side three times, as well as receiving numerous individual awards throughout her career.

Riddell and Garner were both included in the All-Australian team alongside their North Melbourne teammates Tahlia Randall and Blaithin Bogue. This recognition highlights the strength of the Kangaroos as they prepare for the grand final against the Brisbane Lions, scheduled for Saturday. The Kangaroos enter the match as defending champions and are riding a remarkable 26-match winning streak, making them the favourites to retain their title.

As anticipation builds for the decider, Riddell’s individual success and her partnership with Garner will be crucial for North Melbourne’s performance. The duo’s chemistry, both on and off the field, continues to be a significant driving force behind the team’s success in the AFLW.
