Dolphins Sign Cornerback Jack Jones Following Burns’ Injury

The Miami Dolphins have signed free agent cornerback Jack Jones after Artie Burns suffered a torn ACL during training camp. This decision comes as the team seeks to bolster its defensive lineup in light of Burns’ injury, which was confirmed on March 15, 2024.

Burns, who sustained the injury on the first day of training camp, was placed on season-ending injured reserve last Thursday. The Dolphins did not disclose the specifics of his injury, but it has created an immediate need for additional depth at the cornerback position. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins had been actively exploring options to enhance their defensive capabilities, even expressing confidence in their existing roster.

In a move to address this gap, Miami also signed veteran cornerback Cornell Armstrong earlier this week. Jones, 27, has a notable background, having started 16 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He was released by the Raiders on April 7, 2023, after unsuccessful trade attempts.

During his time with the Raiders, Jones recorded career highs, including 69 tackles, 16 passes defended, and three interceptions. However, he also faced challenges in coverage, allowing 698 yards, nine touchdowns, and posting a passer rating of 108.9 when targeted. Jones was originally drafted in the fourth round by the New England Patriots in 2022 and has since played in 42 games, starting in 21, accumulating a total of seven interceptions, 27 passes defended, and 136 tackles.

This strategic signing reflects the Dolphins’ commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the upcoming season, especially after the loss of a key player like Burns. The organization continues to evaluate and adapt its roster as it prepares for the challenges ahead.

Overall, the Dolphins are focused on strengthening their defense as they look to make a significant impact in the league this season.
