Essendon Releases Veterans Goldstein and Laverde Amid Turmoil

Essendon Football Club is undergoing significant changes as veteran ruckman Todd Goldstein and defender Jayden Laverde have not been offered contracts for the upcoming season. This decision comes amid a backdrop of unrest within the club, characterized by the dissatisfaction of contracted captain Zach Merrett and the potential exits of other key players.

The Bombers are facing a challenging period, with Merrett reportedly meeting with Hawthorn to discuss his future. Additionally, defender Jordan Ridley has expressed a desire to leave the club, while Sam Draper is set to depart as a free agent. In this context, both Goldstein and Laverde have indicated their intentions to continue their playing careers elsewhere.

Laverde, who has been a close friend of Merrett’s, is expected to seek a position with the GWS Giants, joining former Bombers forward Jake Stringer. The 29-year-old has had a commendable career, playing 145 games and scoring 38 goals since being drafted at pick No. 20 in 2014.

Goldstein, now 37, joined Essendon at the end of 2023 after an illustrious career at North Melbourne, where he played 315 games. During his time with Essendon, he participated in 30 matches, including 16 appearances this year due to injuries affecting both Draper and Nick Bryan.

Essendon Faces Ruckman Shortage

With the exits of Goldstein and Laverde, Essendon must now actively seek an experienced ruckman. Bryan is currently recovering from an ACL tear, leaving Vigo Visentini, who is still relatively inexperienced, as the only available option in that position.

In a statement reflecting on the departures, Essendon’s football boss Daniel McPherson expressed gratitude for the contributions made by both players during their tenure with the club. He acknowledged their efforts and the impact they had on the team.

As the Bombers navigate this turbulent phase, the focus will undoubtedly be on rebuilding the squad and addressing the concerns of their remaining players. The upcoming season presents both challenges and opportunities for Essendon as they aim to restore stability and competitiveness on the field.
