FIA Extends F1 Sprint Race Practice Time for 2026 Season

The FIA has announced changes to the practice schedule for Formula 1 sprint weekends starting in the 2026 season. In response to feedback from teams regarding limited practice time, the FIA will extend free practice sessions during these weekends when a red flag occurs. This adjustment aims to ensure that teams receive adequate time to prepare before qualifying and racing.

During sprint weekends, teams currently participate in only one hour of practice on Friday morning. Following this session, they immediately move into sprint qualifying later that same day. Traditionally, the session clock does not stop during red flags, which has raised concerns about teams not having sufficient time to fine-tune their cars.

By restructuring practice times, the FIA seeks to enhance the competitive landscape of Formula 1. This change is likely to provide teams with an improved opportunity to adjust their setups based on track conditions and performance data.

The decision reflects the FIA’s commitment to addressing the common complaints from teams regarding the compressed schedule during sprint weekends. With the upcoming 2025 season still in progress, teams are hopeful that these adjustments will lead to a more equitable and exciting competitive environment in 2026.

As Formula 1 continues to evolve, stakeholders are keenly observing how these changes will impact team dynamics and overall race strategies. The FIA’s proactive approach signifies its willingness to adapt regulations to meet the needs of teams and enhance the fan experience. The extended practice sessions may introduce new variables into the sprint format, potentially reshaping the strategies teams employ during these high-paced events.
