The Melbourne Storm will be without key players as they prepare for their home match against the Manly Sea Eagles on Saturday. Cameron Munster remains absent from training following the passing of his father, Steven Munster, while Ryan Papenhuyzen is uncertain about his recovery from a calf injury. The absence of these two stars raises concerns for the team’s performance in the upcoming fixture.
Munster Given Time to Grieve
Officials at Melbourne Storm have granted Munster time away from the club in light of his father’s unexpected death. Steven Munster passed away just days before Queensland’s victory in the State of Origin decider last Wednesday. Papenhuyzen noted that Munster is in “good spirits” but emphasized that he will return only when he feels ready.
“The club’s been really good to give him some time off,” Papenhuyzen stated. “It’s a massive toll to come back from, and the club’s been really supportive.” While Munster is listed in the team for Saturday’s match, a decision regarding his return will be made later this week.
Papenhuyzen’s Injury Status Uncertain
Papenhuyzen, who has missed the last two games due to a calf injury, is also facing challenges. He plans to test his injury this week but does not expect to be fit in time for the Sea Eagles match. He described the situation as frustrating, given the proximity to recovery.
“The little ones are probably more annoying because you can see the finish line right there and you want to push,” he said.
Despite the setbacks, Papenhuyzen remains focused on the long-term goal of the season. He indicated that rushing back could lead to further complications, stating, “I’d rather be up and firing for the finals than risk doing any further damage.” He acknowledged the importance of patience, especially given the team’s current form and performance without him.
As the Storm navigates these challenges, the focus remains on maintaining team morale and preparing effectively for the forthcoming clash against Manly. With both Munster and Papenhuyzen on the sidelines, the team will need to rally together to ensure they remain competitive in the NRL season.
