North Melbourne Aims for Record Win Streak Against Hawthorn

In a remarkable display of dominance, North Melbourne has equalled the historic winning streak of 23 consecutive games, previously set by Geelong during the 1952-53 VFL seasons. With a chance to become the first team in AFL or AFLW history to achieve 24 straight victories, the Kangaroos will face off against Hawthorn on September 29, 2023, in the final round before the finals.

While the victory against St Kilda secured their place in the record books, it came with challenges. Vicki Wall was helped off the field in the last quarter due to a left leg injury, and Paige Trudgeon of St Kilda also sustained an injury during the match. Despite these setbacks, North’s midfield was led by Jess Riddell, who continued her impressive form with 42 disposals, following her record-setting performance of 45 disposals earlier this month.

North Melbourne showcased their offensive prowess, kicking an impressive 50 points or more in all 11 games this season, resulting in a staggering percentage of 317.9. They have remained unbeaten since their loss in the 2023 grand final, with their only blemish being a draw against Geelong in round two of last season.

The loss for St Kilda ended their six-game winning streak and hindered their chances of qualifying for the finals for the first time. To remain in contention, they must secure a victory against the Western Bulldogs at home on October 1, 2023.

In this recent match, North Melbourne rested key players Emma Kearney and Jenna Bruton due to a five-day break before the Hawthorn game. Newcomer Ella Slocombe made her senior debut, contributing to North’s strong start by helping the team score the first two goals. The Kangaroos managed to keep St Kilda scoreless in the opening term, a first for the Saints this season.

St Kilda showed resilience in the second quarter, with Jesse Wardlaw scoring midway through the term. However, North Melbourne responded decisively, securing four goals to St Kilda’s two, leading to a commanding halftime advantage of 38 points. Serene Watson led St Kilda with a team-high 21 possessions, but it was not enough to overcome North’s strong performance.

As North Melbourne heads into their final game of the regular season, the stakes are high. A victory against Hawthorn would not only cement their place in history but also set the tone for the upcoming finals. The team’s ability to maintain their winning momentum will be crucial as they aim for championship success.
