Sheffield United Reappoints Chris Wilder Following Selles’ Dismissal

Sheffield United has reappointed Chris Wilder as manager, following the dismissal of Ruben Selles after a disappointing start to the season. Wilder returns to the club he previously managed for two stints, signing a three-year deal and set to lead the team against Charlton in the Championship this Saturday.

Wilder’s new role marks his third time managing the Blades. He was initially replaced by Selles on June 18, 2023, after Sheffield United’s loss in the Championship play-off final against Sunderland. However, under Selles, the club struggled significantly, finding itself at the bottom of the Championship table after losing all five league matches during his tenure.

Selles’ final match in charge was the 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town last Friday, which highlighted the team’s ongoing issues. In total, Selles managed just one goal across six competitive matches, leading to his sacking on Sunday. The team’s early exit from the Carabao Cup, following a loss to Birmingham City, further compounded the challenges faced under his leadership.

Wilder’s Previous Success and Expectations

During his last season in charge, Wilder led Sheffield United to an impressive 92 points in the Championship, finishing third behind Burnley and Leeds. His previous track record includes guiding the club from League One to the Premier League, which has raised expectations for his return.

An official statement from Sheffield United emphasized the need for change: “Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion.” The statement highlighted Wilder’s deep understanding of the club and his ability to restore momentum and unity among players and supporters.

Sky Sports News’ Sanny Rudravajhala noted the fans’ reaction during recent matches, stating that there was a palpable shift in support for the players once Selles departed the pitch. Many supporters view Wilder as the ideal candidate to turn the team’s fortunes around, given his familiarity with the squad he largely helped assemble.

Wilder’s Emotional Departure and Return

In an emotional farewell statement in June, Wilder expressed his regret over leaving the club, saying, “I depart with some cherished memories and feel proud to be talked about in the same manner that special Sheffield United managers are remembered.” His connection to the club and the city of Sheffield is evident in his sentiments.

Wilder’s return is seen as crucial, particularly in light of the current standings. With Sheffield United sitting at the bottom of the table and facing an uphill battle for promotion, his leadership will be put to the test immediately.

The club’s ownership acknowledged its responsibility for the recent disappointing results and reiterated its commitment to supporting the team in its pursuit of promotion. As Wilder prepares for his homecoming at Bramall Lane, all eyes will be on the Blades to see if they can reverse their fortunes and climb the Championship table.
