Jannik Sinner will not participate in Italy’s defence of the Davis Cup title, disappointing fans ahead of the Final 8 scheduled to take place in Bologna from November 18 to 23, 2025. The absence of the world’s second-ranked player opens the door for Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the current world No. 1, who aims to secure another title for his nation. Spain last triumphed in the tournament in 2019 with the legendary Rafael Nadal as part of the team.
Italian team captain Filippo Volandri confirmed Sinner’s unavailability but expressed confidence in the remaining squad. “Jannik Sinner has not given his availability for 2025. The Davis Cup is, and will remain, always his home, and I am sure that Jannik will soon be part of the team again,” Volandri stated. He emphasized that the team is prepared to fight for their country, highlighting the readiness of players like Matteo Berrettini, Simone Bolelli, Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Musetti, and Andrea Vavassori.
Sinner had a remarkable year, clinching titles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon while reaching the finals of the French Open and the US Open, where he faced Alcaraz. Just a week before the Davis Cup, Sinner and Alcaraz will meet again in Turin for the ATP Finals, where Sinner will defend his title.
In another development, Alexander Zverev is set to make his debut at the Davis Cup Finals, representing Germany. The 28-year-old has been named to the team as they look to improve their standing in the tournament.
Australia, which reached the finals in 2022 and 2023, did not qualify this year. They were eliminated after losing to Belgium in the second qualifying round held in Sydney in September.
The draw for the quarter-finals showcases intriguing matchups:
1. Italy vs. Austria
2. France vs. Belgium
3. Spain vs. Czech Republic
4. Argentina vs. Germany
The semi-finals will see the winners of these matches face off, adding to the excitement as teams vie for the prestigious title. The Davis Cup remains a coveted competition in men’s tennis, drawing significant attention from fans and media alike.
