Apple Launches AirPods Pro 3 with Live Translation Feature

Apple recently unveiled its latest flagship earbuds, the AirPods Pro 3, introducing a suite of enhancements that includes a built-in heart rate monitor and a redesigned fit. Among the most notable features is live translation, allowing users to communicate seamlessly across language barriers. However, it is important to note that this functionality is not exclusive to the new model.

In a demonstration during the product announcement, Apple showcased how the live translation feature works. When conversing with someone who speaks a different language, users can hear a real-time translation of the other person’s words through their AirPods. The device enhances noise cancellation to minimize ambient sounds, helping users focus on the translation. Additionally, when users speak, their words are displayed as translated text on the iPhone screen, allowing the other party to understand their responses.

Despite the excitement surrounding the AirPods Pro 3, consumers do not need to purchase this model to take advantage of live translation. Apple’s own comparison tool indicates that the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation also support this feature. The underlying technology powering live translation is found in iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence, meaning any compatible iPhone, such as the iPhone 15 Pro or newer, along with the latest AirPods firmware, can access this functionality.

This revelation highlights a trend in Apple’s marketing strategy. The company often emphasizes new features as exclusive to the latest devices, which can create a perception that older models lack capabilities. For instance, during the same announcement, Apple introduced new health features for its smartwatches, including hypertension alerts and sleep scores. While these were presented as unique to the newest models, they are also available on the Series 9 and newer for hypertension alerts, and on the Series 6 and newer for sleep scores.

While Apple’s focus on showcasing cutting-edge features on their latest devices is understandable, it raises questions about transparency. Users may feel misled if they believe certain functionalities are unavailable on their existing devices. As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial for consumers to be aware of the capabilities of their devices, regardless of their model year.

In conclusion, the launch of the AirPods Pro 3 presents an exciting advancement in personal audio technology, particularly with the introduction of live translation. Yet, existing owners of older models can also enjoy this feature, provided they have compatible hardware and software. This development emphasizes the importance of understanding the full potential of current technology, regardless of when it was purchased.
