Apple Plans Minor Refresh for MacBook Pro with M5 Chips

Apple is preparing for a refresh of its MacBook Pro line, scheduled for early 2026. This update will introduce new models featuring the next generation of Apple Silicon, including the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips. While the changes are expected to be modest, those in the market for a new laptop should be aware of what to anticipate from this refresh.

What to Expect from the New MacBook Pro

The upcoming MacBook Pro models are set to utilize TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, specifically the N3P variant. Although performance improvements are anticipated, they are likely to be incremental rather than groundbreaking. Aside from these internal enhancements, significant design changes will not be part of this refresh. For a more substantial update, including features such as an OLED display and a thinner design, consumers will need to wait until late 2026.

Rumors suggest that the new MacBook Pro models may also support Wi-Fi 7, similar to the recently launched iPhone 16 lineup. This enhancement was notably absent in the previous generation, the M4 MacBook Pro models.

Release Timeline and Market Impact

Traditionally, Apple releases its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models in October. However, according to a report from Bloomberg, the company is considering a shift to an early 2026 launch, likely around January. This strategy could parallel the introduction of the M2 Pro and M2 Max models in early 2023.

In the meantime, a new iPad Pro featuring the M5 chip is expected to debut in the fall, marking it as the first device to showcase this new technology. This trend of staggered releases has been observed previously, including during the introduction of the M4 chip.

Given these developments, the upcoming M5 MacBook Pro is shaping up to be another modest refresh in Apple’s lineup. Potential buyers may find it more advantageous to consider existing models or to hold off for the more extensive update planned for 2026.

For those interested in current offerings, the M4 14-inch model is available starting at approximately $1,426, while the M4 Pro 14-inch model starts at around $1,776. Both prices reflect a discount of about $200 from standard retail values. The M4 Pro 16-inch model is also available at a discount of over 10% off.

As Apple continues to evolve its product line, staying informed about these updates can help consumers make the best purchasing decisions in a competitive market.
