The automotive landscape is gearing up for an exciting showdown as both BMW and Mercedes-Benz prepare to unveil their latest electric SUVs at the Munich Motor Show. The event will kick off on September 8, 2025, with BMW showcasing the iX3, its first model from the new ‘Neue Klasse’ range, just a day after Mercedes-Benz reveals the all-new GLC equipped with EQ Technology.
BMW has positioned the iX3 as “one of the most significant new vehicles in its history.” This model will be the pioneer of the Neue Klasse, an ambitious project for which the company has invested billions. The Neue Klasse will introduce an advanced 800V electric vehicle architecture that aims to support numerous future models. According to BMW, this architecture will enable the launch of 40 new or updated vehicles, including offerings from Mini and Rolls-Royce, by 2027.
The iX3 is expected to reach Australian showrooms in 2026. The initial prototype was unveiled in November 2024, although detailed specifications remain limited. Notably, the iX3 will feature rapid charging capabilities of up to 400 kW and a WLTP driving range of up to 800 km, nearly doubling the previous model’s range of 460 km. The fast-charging technology allows drivers to gain approximately 350 km of range in just ten minutes. Unlike previous versions, BMW will not offer a front-drive variant of the iX3, as the platform is designed for rear- and all-wheel drive configurations. A dual-motor prototype has demonstrated outputs of 300 kW and 600 Nm, representing a significant upgrade over the existing model, which delivers 210 kW and 400 Nm.
In parallel, the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology will compete directly with the iX3. This model replaces the discontinued EQC and utilizes the ‘MB.EA’ dedicated EV architecture. The GLC will also be available in both rear- and all-wheel drive configurations, with power outputs reaching up to 500 kW. It will feature an 800V electrical architecture and will be equipped with various battery options. These include a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which is expected to provide a WLTP-rated range of just over 500 km, and a 94.5 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery that can extend the range to more than 800 km.
According to industry data, BMW ranked as Australia’s fifth best-selling EV brand in the first half of 2025, with 3,090 deliveries. In contrast, Mercedes-Benz secured seventh place with 1,581 deliveries. The BMW iX1 emerged as the top-selling EV for the brand and was the 11th most popular electric vehicle overall in Australia, surpassing the i4 electric liftback.
The IAA Mobility Summit, commonly known as the Munich Motor Show, will be open to the public from September 9 to September 12, 2025. This event will serve as a crucial platform for both automakers to showcase their innovative advancements in electric vehicle technology and engage with potential customers. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, the rivalry between BMW and Mercedes-Benz is sure to intensify, offering consumers a wider array of options in the increasingly competitive landscape of sustainable transportation.
