Google Introduces AI Image Editing Tools for Slides and Vids

Google has unveiled two innovative AI image editing features designed to enhance creativity in Google Slides and Google Vids. These tools, which build on existing generative image capabilities, aim to assist users in crafting visually appealing presentations and videos, even without professional design skills. The new features, titled **Replace Background** and **Expand Image Background**, are set to streamline the editing process significantly.

Revolutionizing Image Editing

The **Replace Background** feature represents a significant advancement from the previous “remove background” tool. Users can now substitute the original background of an image with a completely new, AI-generated scene by simply entering a text prompt. For instance, a standard product photo of a chair can be transformed to showcase it in a “modern living room” or a “cozy café.” This capability not only makes product visualization easier for customers but also enhances professionalism in creating “Meet the Team” slides. By replacing distracting backgrounds with a clean, unified design, users can present their team members more effectively.

The second feature, **Expand Image Background**, offers an intelligent solution for adjusting aspect ratios without compromising image quality. This tool allows users to expand the background of an image seamlessly, effectively acting as an “un-crop.” If a vertical photo needs to fit a horizontal slide, users can select their image, choose the desired aspect ratio, and the tool generates various options for review and insertion. This flexibility makes existing images more impactful and better suited for different presentation formats.

Access and Availability

To utilize these new features, users can right-click on an image and select “Edit image” or use the “Generate an image” icon located in the Vids or Slides sidebar. The rollout for most users began on **August 14, 2025**, and these features are accessible to most paid Google Workspace customers, including those on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on.

With these enhancements, Google continues to empower users to create polished and professional content easily. As AI technology evolves, tools like these are expected to redefine how individuals approach design and presentation, making creative processes more accessible to everyone.
