GWM has introduced the 2026 Haval H6 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), a significant addition to its lineup aimed at maintaining its status as the best-selling Chinese automotive brand in Australia. As the demand for hybrid vehicles continues to grow, the H6 now offers a comprehensive range that includes petrol, hybrid, and PHEV powertrains.
The new Haval H6 PHEV enters a highly competitive segment that features models such as the Mitsubishi Outlander, BYD Sealion 6, and the upcoming Toyota RAV4, set to launch next year. With the introduction of this model, GWM aims to bolster its sales performance in a market that is increasingly leaning towards electrification.
Power and Performance
The H6 PHEV is available in two variants: the entry-level PHEV 2WD Lux and the more robust Ultra AWD model, which is the focus of this review. The Lux variant is priced at $47,990 drive-away, while the Ultra AWD model comes at $50,990. Both options represent a competitive price point, especially when compared to rivals like the MG HS PHEV, which retails between $49,690 and $55,990 drive-away.
Under the hood, the H6 Ultra PHEV features a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor on each axle, producing a combined output of 268 kW and 760 Nm of torque. This setup allows for a claimed electric-only range of 100 km and an impressive total range of 1,043 km, with a swift 0-100 km/h time of just 4.8 seconds. The vehicle boasts an official fuel consumption figure of only 1.1 L/100 km, contingent upon regular battery charging.
Interior and Technology Upgrades
Improvements to the interior of the H6 are notable. The redesigned cabin features a new two-spoke steering wheel, a fresh centre console, and a larger 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, complete with a crisp 360-degree surround-view camera. The layout is more user-friendly, with a column-shifter replacing the previous rotary-dial gear selector, creating a cleaner look.
The upgraded Coffee operating system enhances the vehicle’s technological capabilities, offering a more responsive interface and the option for voice commands powered by artificial intelligence. Initial tests indicate that the system is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easier for drivers to access key features during their journeys.
Comfort is further enhanced through features like heated and ventilated front seats, a nine-speaker audio system, and ample storage throughout the cabin. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split, providing flexibility for carrying cargo, although the PHEV configuration does result in a slight reduction in luggage capacity compared to its petrol counterparts.
While the overall perceived quality of materials is satisfactory, there are some concerns regarding the use of scratchy interior materials in certain models.
Driving Experience and Handling
During a brief test drive, the H6 PHEV showcased a comfortable driving position and a smooth powertrain transition between electric and petrol modes. The vehicle’s handling has been enhanced through local chassis tuning by Rob Trubiani, a former chassis development expert at Holden. This tuning is designed to cater to the unique driving conditions often encountered on Australia’s roads.
The H6 PHEV performed admirably on various surfaces, absorbing bumps effectively while maintaining stability. The steering, available in both ‘Light’ and ‘Sport’ modes, offers a commendable balance between responsiveness and comfort, enhancing the overall driving experience.
Despite the positive initial impressions, a comprehensive road test in varied conditions is necessary to fully evaluate the vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency.
As for safety, the current-generation H6 received a five-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in 2022, valid until December 2028. However, the PHEV variant has not yet undergone testing and remains unrated.
GWM offers a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty for the H6, complemented by an eight-year warranty for the PHEV battery pack.
In summary, the 2026 Haval H6 PHEV emerges as a compelling option in the mid-size SUV market. It combines impressive technology, a well-appointed interior, and a robust powertrain, making it a strong contender against established competitors. While there are areas for improvement, particularly regarding servicing costs, the H6 PHEV is a vehicle worthy of consideration for those seeking a practical and efficient hybrid option.
