MG Motor Australia has confirmed the launch of a new electric hatchback, the MG 4, set to debut in the local market in the second quarter of 2026. This model, which was first revealed in China earlier this year, will not replace the existing MG 4 lineup. Instead, the new version will feature a more softly styled design and front-wheel drive, positioned beneath the current rear- and all-wheel drive variants.
According to Peter Ciao, CEO of MG Motor Australia, the introduction of this front-wheel drive model represents an essential addition to their electric vehicle (EV) offerings. He stated, “The new-for-2026 front-wheel drive [model] will be a completely different vehicle, perfect for the city. Balancing driver usage needs and production cost considerations of rear-wheel drive, we saw the opportunity for an affordable FWD vehicle to complement the MG 4 RWD and AWD.”
The upcoming MG 4 will be available with two battery options: 43kWh and 54kWh. This contrasts with the current MG 4, which is offered only with a larger 64kWh battery. The existing model provides three battery configurations, including a 51kWh battery with a range of 350 km, a 64kWh version offering between 400 km and 450 km, and a 77kWh battery that can achieve up to 530 km.
MG has also indicated that the current rear- and all-wheel drive variants will receive updated features but will come at higher prices. The company is encouraging potential buyers to act quickly, stating that the current MG 4 is available for “under $40,000 drive-away.”
The specifications of the new MG 4 include a single 120 kW front-mounted electric motor with 250 Nm of torque. Its 42.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery is expected to deliver a range of 437 km, while the larger 53.95kWh battery aims for up to 530 km. These range figures are based on the lenient China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which differs from the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) used in other regions.
In terms of design, the new MG 4 will feature a MacPherson strut front suspension paired with a torsion beam rear suspension, differing from the multi-link independent rear suspension found in the existing MG 4 model. The hatchback will also include a range of interior features designed for practicality, such as 30 storage spaces and a concealed dry/wet separation storage area under the boot floor.
Among the innovative features are soft-light mirrors designed for make-up touch-ups, a ventilated wireless phone charger, and a versatile ‘king bed mode’ when the rear seats are folded down. The infotainment system will come standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, with an optional 15.6-inch unit providing enhanced connectivity through MG x Oppo Smart Car Connectivity.
Boot space is generous, measuring 471 litres and expanding to 1,362 litres with the rear seats down. The new MG 4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. This makes it longer, wider, and taller than the current model, offering a more spacious interior.
While MG has yet to announce the pricing for the new front-wheel drive MG 4 in Australia, it will likely compete against models like the BYD Dolphin, starting from $29,990 before on-road costs, and the GWM Ora, which currently retails from $33,990 drive-away. The existing MG 4 has been offered from as low as $30,990 drive-away, indicating a competitive market ahead.
As MG prepares for this significant expansion of its electric vehicle lineup, the introduction of the new MG 4 is poised to enhance the brand’s appeal among Australian consumers seeking affordable and practical electric options.
