UPDATE: Author Alexandria Burnham has officially launched her debut novel, Swallow, during a vibrant pirate-themed event in Parramatta. The book, which has been five years in the making, dives into the gripping tale of William Swallow, a transported convict navigating life in early 19th-century Australia.
The pre-launch event, held just before the official release in November 2023, featured a live band and maritime-inspired cuisine, immersing guests in the novel’s adventurous spirit. Attendees celebrated with skull and crossbones flags, marking the milestone in Burnham’s journey as a writer.
Set against the backdrop of historical maritime events, Swallow chronicles the real-life story of William Swallow, who was sentenced for petty larceny in England, leaving behind his family. The narrative unfolds nine years later, aboard the government vessel Cyprus, heading to the penal settlement on Sarah Island. Faced with harsh punishment, Swallow rallied fellow convicts to mutiny, attempting a perilous return to England armed only with a compass and sextant.
This dramatic tale echoes the legendary mutiny of the Bounty, and the detailed court transcripts surrounding Swallow’s story are vital to Australia’s early maritime history. Burnham, previously known for her screenwriting credits in films like Unsound, has crafted this novel as the first in a planned trilogy.
In a statement regarding her work, Burnham remarked, “Australia often gravitates toward stories of outlaws and people on the margins.” Her extensive research into Swallow’s historical context has significantly shaped the novel’s tone and direction.
Since the launch, Burnham has engaged in bookstore signings across Sydney and will continue promotional activities in Tasmania in January 2024, including an appearance at The Pirate’s Festival at Eaglehawk Neck. This event commemorates the anniversary of the seizure of the Seaflower, a ship linked to Swallow’s history.
With the second book in the trilogy already in development, Burnham is poised to keep readers engaged. Details of her future appearances will be available in the 2026 Hawkesbury Library events program.
Readers can purchase Swallow through WestWords and join the growing excitement surrounding this captivating tale. Don’t miss out on this compelling story that brings to life the struggles and resilience of those who dared to challenge their fate on the high seas.
