Australia Post to Deploy 500 Electric Trikes Before Christmas

UPDATE: Australia Post has just announced a major shift in its delivery fleet, rolling out 500 electric tricycles ahead of the busy Christmas season. This initiative aims to replace traditional petrol-powered motorcycles, marking a significant move towards sustainable delivery solutions.

The electric trikes, known as Rapide 3, will hit the streets before the Christmas 2023 rush, enhancing delivery efficiency. Each vehicle can carry up to 150 parcels and travel at speeds of up to 80 km/h with a range of 180 km on a single charge. This upgrade is not just about speed; it’s about meeting the soaring demand for online shopping as the festive season approaches.

Australia Post’s Group CEO, Paul Graham, emphasized the urgency of this transition. “People will be able to get more rapid delivery for their e-commerce orders,” he stated. This move is expected to create between 3,000 to 3,500 jobs during the peak period, helping the company manage the anticipated record number of deliveries.

These three-wheeled electric trikes will be deployed across all states and territories in Australia, joining a fleet of over 5,600 electric vehicles already in operation. This includes various models such as Fuso eCanter trucks and Mercedes-Benz eVito vans, all powered by 37 dedicated charging stations established for the postal service.

Graham noted that the introduction of these vehicles is crucial as motorcycles have been among the most dangerous vehicles in the fleet. By replacing them with electric trikes, Australia Post aims to enhance safety while contributing to its environmental goals. The company is also exploring options to reduce emissions from heavy-duty trucks and air freight to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

This announcement follows a broader trend in the logistics sector, where companies like FedEx and ANC Delivers are also investing in electric vehicles. Just last month, FedEx revealed plans to integrate 55 electric vans and trucks into its fleet, further highlighting the industry’s shift towards greener alternatives.

As electric vehicle sales continue to surge—reaching 11.3% of all new vehicle sales in September—Australia Post is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation. The urgency of the rollout reflects not only a commitment to sustainability but also a response to the changing landscape of consumer demand.

In summary, Australia Post’s deployment of 500 electric tricycles is a bold step towards modernizing its delivery network, ensuring faster service, and enhancing safety. As the holidays approach, the impact of this initiative will be closely watched, not just by consumers, but by the entire logistics industry. This development is set to reshape the future of parcel delivery in Australia.
