Car Set Ablaze in Anti-Semitic Attack, Authorities Investigate

URGENT UPDATE: A car was set ablaze in a suspected anti-Semitic attack early on December 25, 2023, in St Kilda East, Melbourne. Authorities are on high alert following the devastating Bondi Beach massacre that claimed 15 lives just days prior.

Police responded to the suspicious fire on Balaclava Rd around 2:50 AM, evacuating the occupants of the nearby house as a precaution. Fortunately, no one was inside the vehicle, which was adorned with a Hanukkah-related sign. Reports indicate that the car belongs to a local rabbi, raising significant concerns within the Jewish community.

Detectives are actively investigating the incident and have already identified a person who may assist in their inquiries. The Jewish protection group, CSG Victoria, confirmed that the vehicle displayed the chanukiah, a nine-branched candelabrum linked to Hanukkah celebrations. They reassured the public that no community members were harmed and emphasized their ongoing communication with law enforcement.

In a statement on Instagram, CSG Victoria remarked, “CSG has already been operating at a heightened level with increased patrols and will continue to do so.” This comes as state and federal governments face mounting pressure to address the alarming rise in anti-Semitism following the terror attack at Bondi Beach on December 14. The attack targeted a Hanukkah gathering, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries.

Authorities in Victoria are promising a crackdown on hate crimes, with plans to empower police to veto protests in response to designated terror attacks. This proposed legislation mirrors similar measures recently enacted in New South Wales.

As the investigation unfolds, the community remains vigilant. The situation highlights the urgent need for protective measures and a collective stand against hate. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
