URGENT UPDATE: A heartfelt tribute was unveiled at the Hawksdale Swimming Pool on December 13, 2025, honoring long-time volunteer Julie Bos. The community gathered to reveal a stunning mural painted by local artist Britt Gow, dedicated to Bos’s over 30 years of service.
The surprise event was filled with emotion as Bos’s family, including her sons Andrew and Adrien, traveled to join the celebration, keeping the secret well-guarded. “I knew the mural was to be unveiled because we’d put it in for a grant,” Bos explained. However, the magnitude of the recognition took her by surprise. “When they called my name, I thought, ‘no, please no,’ but it was lovely,” she shared.
Bos’s journey with the pool began in her childhood when she learned to swim there. Returning as an adult, she became integral to the pool’s committee, serving as treasurer and managing crucial operations like chemical maintenance and cleaning. Despite her dedication, Bos revealed she’s only swum at the pool five times in her adult life. “I don’t tend to be here visibly very much during the day, but I just come back at night-time and do what needs to be done,” the 67-year-old said. “It’s my downtime… very peaceful.”
Pool manager Janine Sheen praised Bos’s unwavering commitment, stating, “If she hadn’t been doing what she was doing, this pool would not be here. She has been the backbone of the Hawksdale swimming pool for years, and I’m hoping she’ll be here for a lot more years.”
This mural celebration not only highlights Bos’s significant contributions but also reflects the community’s appreciation for those who serve selflessly. As the Hawksdale Swimming Pool continues to thrive, Bos’s legacy will be forever painted on its walls.
