Just two years after their chaotic debut, Chris Johnson, vice-president of the group, proudly announces, “You can see they’re all pulling, they’re all working,” as the donkeys navigate a training course near Bendigo.
The transformation began in early 2025 when passionate owners, inspired by a display of Clydesdale horses at the Good Old Days Festival in New South Wales, set out to master the art of donkey cart-pulling. This annual festival showcases the historical skills of working horses, igniting a desire among the donkey owners to replicate this impressive feat with their own animals.
Under the guidance of experts Laurie Jensen and John Murdock, the group embarked on a journey to teach their donkeys—Tui, Rua, Parcy, Watson, Timor, Sky, Blaze, and Jasper—how to work together cohesively. Initial sessions were tumultuous, with donkeys running amok, but the dedication of the owners and trainers prevailed.
Chris reflects on the challenges, emphasizing the importance of creating a positive environment for both the humans and the donkeys. “Their ears are very expressive, and their body language lets you know,” she explains, likening their moods to Eeyore from “Winnie the Pooh.” Unlike Eeyore’s droopy demeanor, these donkeys exhibit alertness and enthusiasm, ready to engage with their surroundings.
