BREAKING: The Dragons have clinched their first ever one-day title in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association, defeating defending champions Woodend with a commanding performance on Sunday. This victory marks a significant turnaround after a challenging few weeks for the team.
The match, held at Woodend, saw the Dragons bounce back from recent setbacks, showcasing their resilience and skill. Dragons captain-coach Jarryd Vernon expressed his team’s determination, stating, “We’ve been on the back foot the last couple of weeks after Christmas. We really wanted to come out and play our best cricket.”
After winning the toss, Woodend set a competitive total of 9-209 in their allotted 45 overs, with Hamish McDonald leading their scoring with 38 runs. However, a crucial run-out of captain Marcus Stewart, who contributed 33 runs, shifted the momentum in favor of the Dragons. Vernon commented, “I think that shifted the momentum a little bit. The boys rode that momentum.”
The Dragons’ bowling attack, led by Vernon and Leigh Brennan, who each took two wickets, restricted Woodend effectively, allowing them to take control of the match.
In response, the Dragons launched an aggressive batting strategy. With Vernon opening the innings alongside Brenton Cook, they quickly amassed 62 runs for the first wicket. Cook’s explosive performance included a rapid 36 runs off 30 balls, setting the pace for their chase.
