Eight-Year-Old Minted First Coin of 2026 in Historic Ceremony

UPDATE: An 8-year-old boy from Melbourne, Julius Jungerth, made history this morning by minting the first coin of 2026 at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. Over 500 people gathered at the event, eagerly vying for the opportunity to be part of this milestone.

Julius expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s really exciting to be the first person to make their coin today. I can’t wait to show my friends when I get home.” His accomplishment marks a significant moment, as 2026 commemorates 60 years since Australia transitioned to decimal currency on February 14, 1966.

The commemorative design of the new $1 coin features beloved Australian animals from the original designs crafted by renowned artist Stuart Devlin. These include the feathertail glider, frilled-neck lizard, echidna, lyrebird, platypus, emu, and kangaroo, alongside the Southern Cross.

Emily Martin, CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, emphasized the importance of this event, describing it as a celebration of progress and national identity. “For many Australians, the changeover to decimal currency in 1966 was more than a new way to count—it symbolized optimism and a new era,” she remarked.

The first minted coin was carefully placed into a unique display, made from parquetry salvaged from the Mint’s heritage-listed floor, symbolizing a connection between Australia’s past and present.

Australia’s transition to decimal currency remains one of the most successful in history, aided by the memorable “Dollar Bill” campaign that resonates with many Australians today.

The Mint is open throughout the holiday period, inviting the public to mint their own commemorative coins at the gallery press. For more information on visiting hours, check out www.ramint.gov.au.

This historic event not only enriches Australia’s cultural tapestry but also inspires future generations to engage with their national identity and heritage. Don’t miss the chance to share this remarkable moment with friends and family!
