Fire at Swiss Alps Resort Kills 40, Haunting Footage Emerges

UPDATE: A devastating fire erupted early on January 1, 2024, at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, claiming the lives of approximately 40 people and injuring over 115 others. This tragedy marks one of the deadliest incidents in Switzerland’s history. Haunting footage has emerged, revealing the terrifying moment the fire ignited, described by witnesses as reminiscent of a horror movie.

The fire broke out around 1:30 AM local time (11:30 AM AEDT), with reports indicating that the flames were sparked by sparklers in champagne bottles that were too close to the ceiling. Valais Cantonal Police Commander Frédéric Gisler confirmed that emergency services were on the scene within two minutes but were met with chaos as flames quickly engulfed the nightclub.

“Some hypotheses can be confirmed,” said chief prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud during a press conference. “Everything points to the fire starting from sparklers or flares placed in champagne bottles.” Eyewitness accounts corroborate this theory, with one witness stating,

“Once the ceiling was on fire, within about 10 seconds, the entire nightclub was on fire.”

The first confirmed victim has been identified as Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old golfer from Italy. The Italian Golf Federation mourned his loss, highlighting his potential and contributions to the sport. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reported that one Australian is among the injured, extending condolences to all affected.

Witnesses described scenes of sheer terror. 19-year-old Nathan Huguenin, who narrowly escaped, recounted his experience:

“It was like a nightmare. I saw people being resuscitated, people completely burned.”

He and his friends were turned away from the bar due to capacity limits just minutes before the explosion of flames.

Emergency responders faced overwhelming chaos. Stéphane Ganzer, the Valais security director, remarked on the horrific scenes, stating,

“Partygoers became improvised first responders, performing CPR and assisting those who were severely burned.”

As investigations continue, the local community and the world mourn the loss of life and the impact of this tragedy. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.

The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as authorities work to determine the full scope of the disaster and the identities of all victims. The emotional toll of this incident is profound, with many families now facing the aftermath of this horrific event.

Stay tuned for further developments as this tragic story unfolds.
