UPDATE: The Fremantle Dockers have kept their slim AFLW finals hopes alive with a commanding 58-14 victory over the Richmond Tigers at Fremantle Oval, securing a crucial 44-point win. This result, confirmed earlier today, has intensified the race for the top eight as Fremantle remains mathematically in contention.
In a match that unfolded on September 30, 2025, Fremantle showcased their potential with standout performances from Hayley Miller and Aisling McCarthy. Miller dominated early, scoring two goals and contributing to six score involvements, while McCarthy ended the game with two goals and 32 disposals, solidifying her impact across the field. However, despite their efforts, Fremantle’s percentage remains a challenge at 82.2, significantly lagging behind their rivals.
The Dockers knew they needed a fast start, but Richmond initially took the lead with a stunning goal from Isabel Bacon. Yet, the tide turned as Fremantle’s midfield began to assert dominance. McCarthy’s early game statistics included 13 disposals and four inside 50s, establishing her as a key player in the early stages.
Fremantle struggled to convert their possession into points in the first quarter, managing only one goal from six scoring shots. However, they capitalized in the second quarter, with Georgie Brisbane scoring a goal and Miller finding the net again. By halftime, Fremantle had built a substantial lead, holding Richmond scoreless in the second term and forcing them to remain outside their forward 50.
“Our defense was key today, and we really controlled the game in the second quarter,” said Fremantle coach.
With a commanding lead, Fremantle entered the second half aiming to boost their percentage but faced frustration as Richmond tightened their defense. Despite being held goalless in the third quarter, the Dockers regained their form in the final term, with Brisbane and McCarthy each adding to their tallies, securing the win.
Looking ahead, Fremantle’s path to the finals is still challenging. They need a victory against the Adelaide Crows next Sunday and hope for favorable outcomes from other matches, particularly involving the West Coast Eagles and Sydney Swans. If the Carlton Blues fail to win against the GWS Giants, Fremantle could find a way into the top eight.
As the season approaches its climax, the Dockers are determined to keep their hopes alive. Fans are urged to rally behind the team as they prepare for this essential clash in Adelaide. The excitement is palpable as every match counts in this thrilling finish to the AFLW season!
