UPDATE: In a stunning display of grit and determination, the Geelong Cats have secured their place in the AFL Grand Final, defeating arch-rivals Hawthorn by a decisive 30 points in a preliminary final on September 19, 2025. This victory comes despite the early exit of star utility Tom Stewart, who was sidelined due to a concussion.

The match, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) before a raucous crowd of 99,597 fans, saw Geelong rally from a 21-point deficit to clinch a final score of 17.13 (115) to 13.7 (85). Captain Patrick Dangerfield delivered an extraordinary performance, amassing 32 disposals, three goals, and eight clearances, propelling his team to victory after Stewart’s early departure.

With this win, Geelong, who finished second on the ladder, will face the winner of the upcoming Collingwood-Brisbane clash in next week’s grand final. However, the absence of Stewart due to concussion protocols looms large for the Cats, alongside concerns over key defender Jack Henry, who played through a left ankle injury sustained in the first quarter.

The match began with Hawthorn taking a commanding lead, scoring the first three goals and establishing a 22-1 advantage. Yet, it was Dangerfield’s goal from a free kick that ignited Geelong’s comeback. The Cats gradually took control, with a pivotal goal from Tyson Stengle putting them ahead by the main break.

Geelong dominated the so-called premiership quarter, outscoring the Hawks 7.4 to 3.1, and entered the final term with a commanding 28-point lead. Dangerfield’s third goal, scored as rain began to fall, further solidified the Cats’ position. Stengle capped off the victory with a final goal, marking a standout performance for Geelong.

Despite a valiant effort from Hawthorn, including Jack Gunston’s three goals, the team’s midfield was outclassed by Geelong’s powerful engine room. The Hawks, making their first preliminary final appearance in a decade, were left to reflect on missed opportunities after a strong start.

As Geelong prepares for the grand final, fans are left anticipating whether the Cats can secure their fifth premiership of this century, a feat no club has achieved thus far. Stay tuned for updates as the final approaches!
