URGENT UPDATE: Goulburn’s Uniting Church has officially welcomed Pierre van Blommestein as its new minister, marking a significant shift for the community. Van Blommestein, who recently relocated from Bribie Island, Queensland, is eager to connect with the local population and implement innovative changes.
Van Blommestein’s arrival comes after nearly a decade in Queensland’s subtropical climate, which he found too limiting. “In Queensland, you get ‘hot’ and ‘not so hot’ – that’s about the sum total of seasons,” he explained, expressing his excitement for Goulburn’s diverse weather patterns, reminiscent of his native South Africa.
The new minister brings a unique and profound background to his role. Having served as a military chaplain during the South African Border War, he witnessed the brutal realities of conflict firsthand. “I found a place amongst the medical team who were dealing with wounded soldiers or civilians caught in the crossfire,” he recounted. His experiences as a chaplain have shaped his approach to ministry, emphasizing compassion and support during challenging times.
Van Blommestein’s tenure in the military spanned 19 years, and he faced the complexities of being a liberal chaplain during apartheid. He recalls navigating a government that restricted interracial marriages, stating, “The church said, ‘That’s absolutely none of your business who marries who.'”
As he steps into his new role, Van Blommestein aims to foster community connections that extend beyond traditional church attendance. He has plans to incorporate contemporary music into Sunday services, making them more engaging for a broader audience. His first initiative includes performing at a Christmas lunch on December 25, 2025, for those who may be alone during the holiday.
In his own words, Van Blommestein’s mission is clear: “My role is to be there for people and listen to them during good times and bad.” He is committed to enhancing the church’s outreach and support within the Southern Tablelands.
The Goulburn community can expect a fresh, dynamic approach from their new minister, as he looks to build on the church’s existing programs and connect with those in need. For further details or to get involved, contact the Goulburn Uniting Church at +91 88867 45500.
