Griffith Residents Rally for Urgent Split from Health District

URGENT UPDATE: Griffith residents gathered in force at Memorial Park on September 20, rallying for the immediate split from the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD). Community leaders, including Dr. Narayanan Jayachandra, known as Dr. Jaya, and Member for Murray Helen Dalton, voiced serious concerns over inadequate healthcare services facing the region.

Dr. Jayachandra highlighted alarming gaps in medical staffing, specifically noting the absence of permanent orthopaedic surgeons and an ear, nose, and throat department. “That is sub-third-world country standard,” he stated. “We need to employ staff… this is about getting healthcare out to communities.” His remarks struck a chord with attendees, emphasizing the urgent need for localized care.

Dalton echoed these sentiments, stating, “Our maternity services are under threat. Our emergency department is under threat. Our nurses and doctors are exhausted.” She criticized the MLHD for being managed from afar, asserting that “distant bureaucrats are delivering fewer services, ignoring local voices, and failing to meet the real needs of our people.”

The rally saw numerous advocates, including hospital champion Bill Calabria, who passionately criticized the MLHD’s management of Griffith Base Hospital. “Since they took over control, they have promised a lot and delivered very little,” he declared. Calabria urged the crowd to support the cause, emphasizing the need for reliable healthcare for future generations.

Currently, advocates are promoting a petition that requires over 10,000 signatures to compel Dalton to debate the health district split in state parliament. An inquiry into this issue is on the horizon, with plans for the inquiry team to visit Griffith soon.

This rally is a pivotal moment for Griffith, as residents unite to demand better healthcare services and local governance. Keep an eye on this developing story, as the community fights for their health and future.
