Historic Gun Emplacements Fenced Off: Community Outcry Grows

UPDATE: Widespread community concern erupts as the Lithgow City Council has temporarily fenced off the historic Anti-Aircraft Gun Emplacements in New South Wales, a move that has sparked significant backlash from local residents. This urgent decision was made following a safety assessment that identified critical risks at the site, which dates back to World War II and was intended to protect local industry.

On August 8, 2023, the council announced the fencing in response to an incident that led to an insurance claim against them. A spokesperson for the council stated, “The decision to temporarily fence off the emplacements was made in response to a public safety risk assessment, which identified significant safety risks that need to be mitigated.”

The emplacements, the only known of their kind in NSW, are an important part of Lithgow’s local history. They were built to safeguard the Small Arms Factory but were never fired in combat. Over the years, they have become a notable point of interest for both residents and tourists.

The temporary fencing has incited a wave of frustration on social media, with residents expressing concerns about losing access to these historic relics. A petition has already garnered almost 500 signatures, reflecting the community’s desire to have a say in the future accessibility of the site.

In response to the growing unrest, the council emphasized that the fencing is a short-term safety and preservation measure. “Temporary fencing around each of the Gun Emplacements has been installed until Council can take action to reduce or control the risks, without modifying the valuable and unique historical assets,” the spokesperson confirmed.

Authorities have assured the public that they will consult residents before any permanent measures are implemented. “Lithgow Council understands the community’s concerns and frustrations about this decision but wishes to reiterate that it has been done in the interest of public safety,” the spokesperson added.

As the debate continues, the council is actively working on a long-term plan to address the safety issues while preserving these significant historical sites. Community members are urged to stay engaged and participate in upcoming consultations to voice their opinions.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Lithgow City Council navigates the balance between safety and historical preservation.
