BREAKING: Local artist Holly English has been selected for the highly regarded ‘Behind the Lines’ exhibition, showcasing the best of Australian political cartoons. This annual exhibition, now in its 30th year, is hosted at the Museum of Australian Democracy in Canberra and is recognized as a cultural institution in Australia.
Holly’s cartoon, inspired by her experience at the polling booth in Byron Bay during the 2025 federal election, captures the tumultuous political landscape of the year. She expressed her concerns over disinformation from political volunteers, stating, “I am not sure if the Labor volunteer handing out the ‘how to vote’ card actually didn’t understand the preferencing system or they were told to spread disinformation.”
In a passionate reflection, Holly highlighted the disconnect among voters regarding critical issues, saying, “Labor voters who strongly agree with a ceasefire in Gaza are complacent about Australia supplying weapons parts being used in the conflict. Those supporters seemed unable to make the connection.”
The ‘Behind the Lines’ exhibition is not just an artistic showcase; it also serves as a time capsule of Australian politics, offering an online experience and a paperback edition. The exhibition will also tour in 2026, ensuring that these crucial political narratives reach wider audiences.
Holly expressed her excitement about being featured, stating, “I am beyond honoured to be included in ‘Behind The Lines’ and was thrilled to attend the opening event. It was a joyful occasion to connect with fellow cartoonists, even while tackling serious subjects.”
This year’s exhibition promises to resonate deeply with audiences as it encapsulates the complex emotions surrounding current political affairs in Australia. For more information about Holly English and her work, visit https://hollyenglish.com/ and https://moadoph.gov.au/explore/behind-the-lines.
